Black Oystercatcher is a family-run wine farm at the cool southernmost tip of Africa.
Here the boutique Black Oystercatcher Wines are made from the intensely fruity grapes, formed in Cape Agulhas’ extreme growing conditions. And having farmed at Cape Agulhas for generations, we, the Human family, know these conditions well. We use the constant coastal winds, our marginal soils and the unique geology to grow our small compact berries. The result? Top quality cool climate wines with penetrating, fruit flavours and a distinctive minerality.
We’re more than a winery: Our farm, situated between the small towns of Elim, Bredasdorp and L’Agulhas, in the Overberg region in South Africa, is also home to the Black Oystercatcher Restaurant, Tasting Room & Deli/Gift Shop, Wedding Venue and self-catering Cottages. And now a craft brewery, Fraser’s Folly. We also love the land and natural environment – and do all we can to protect it.
Just because we’re in the business of winemaking, doesn’t mean we don’t also like craft beer.
We’ve always been big fans of the most southerly craft brewery, Fraser’s Folly. And so, when the opportunity came about to partner with Fraser’s Folly, we took it. The result? Well, we now operate a craft brewery!
Fraser’s Folly beer, under the careful eye of founder Fraser Crighton (who remains the brew master and face of the beer), is now made on the Black Oystercatcher Wine Farm.
We converted an old shed into the brew house, and bought new equipment. Now you can also have beer tastings when you visit us – and enjoy Fraser’s Folly beer paired with fresh meals from our kitchen.
At the Black Oystercatcher Restaurant, we live by the season: We serve fresh produce that grows in our own garden as the seasons dictate. As a result, we offer a fresh dining experience, set in a relaxed country atmosphere. Here fresh food, complementing our boutique wines, is prepared to order and enjoyed at leisure. The seasons also determine the mood at this Cape Agulhas restaurant: the refreshing sea breeze will cool you down in summer, or enjoy our cozy log fires in the winter months.
Open Tue to Sun from 11:00 – 14:30. Booking essential
The Black Oystercatcher Wedding Venue: We know and understand how to celebrate true love and the beginnings of a new and exciting journey – as partners. Like our Black Oystercatcher birds who pair for life, we also believe in partnership, cooperation and trust. We look forward to showcasing these to you, as we together create a truly unforgettable day for you.
Truly Overberg goods and produce – from our Deli/Shop & Tasting Room: You won’t find these goods elsewhere. Our Deli/Shop offers a range of creative crafts and local produce, carefully chosen by Sandra Human and her team. From beautiful pottery and fynbos salts, to beauty products and soft leather bags. Or stock up on some bites and snacks from our Deli (like the cheeses, salmons and pâtés available during our busy holiday times – ideal for a picnic). The shop also serves as our Tasting Room. And here you can enjoy a variety of wine tastings, like our Reserve Tasting or Tutored Sauvignon blanc tasting.
Enjoy country life: stay in our four self-catering Cottages. The cottages overlook the Nuwejaars River and biodiversity-rich Agulhas Plain. Each cottage is fully equipped with everything you’ll need for the perfect country getaway. Enjoy activities like birding, hiking or cycling; or simply settle down to revel in the fresh air and country lifestyle found on a working farm.
Our land has been dedicated to conservation: The Black Oystercatcher’s philosophy is to work the land with the least possible interference, in the most natural way. So we’re a founding member of the Nuwejaars Wetlands Special Management Area – the first conservation venture of its kind in South Africa. The Agulhas Plain is also a renowned birding destination. The Black Oystercatcher Wine Farm itself is home to a number of extraordinary bird species. Like the Red-chested Flufftail, found close to the Waagschaalvlei on the Black Oystercatcher farm.
